A website to start your blog
Before you can blog at all, you need a place to run your blog. This can be your own domain or you can create a free blog at wordpress.com.
If you are going to blog for business or if you have business ambitions with your blog, I recommend that you purchase a domain for your blog. Registering a domain name is not expensive, for a few euros you are ready.
In addition to a domain name, you also need hosting. You can compare your domain name and hosting with your computer. Your domain name and website are what you see (screen), the hosting takes place behind the scenes (computer).
Next, you need to install a CMS on your website, choose a theme, come up with blog topics. And last but not least: blogging.

1. Register a domain name
The domain name is the URL of your blog. The URL and domain name of our website is machielsen.nl. In principle, you are free to choose a domain name for your blog, as long as this name is still available.
It is wise to think carefully about your domain name. Are you going to blog about nutrition and health? Then it is a bit strange to choose friesmetmayo.nl as a domain.
Do you want to blog about multiple topics? For example about nutrition, sports, health, and content marketing (because those are topics you like)? Then choose a name that gives you the freedom to switch between topics.
For our SEO project, we write about nutrition, work-out, life hacks, leisure, and recipes. This all fits well with our domain name ‘The Health Center’.
2. Hosting for your website
To start a blog, you need to host your blog somewhere. Simply put, hosting is renting storage space, computing power, and memory on a server.
The hosting party ensures that you can save your blogs, articles, and images. By uploading your website to a hosting party, your website becomes accessible to everyone.
3. Install CMS
Time for the next step: installing a CMS.
A CMS is a Content Management System. This is a program that allows you to post blogs on your domain. The most popular and user-friendly blogging system is WordPress. With most hosting parties you can choose to have WordPress installed.
All you need to do is log into your hosting environment and select ‘Install WordPress’.
4. Choose a theme
Your blog is up and running. The basic version of WordPress is installed and now you can get started.
WordPress is one of the most user-friendly CMSs. So you need little or no knowledge of code to adjust the style of your blog.
You can customize the design of your blog by installing a theme. Some themes are paid and some themes are free.
Most themes have a built-in editor (visual composer). This allows you to customize your blog design yourself.
5. Creating blog topics and writing blogs
Time for the real work. blogging.
